#1 Album That Rocks My World 2011: Destroyer - Kaputt
Audio: Savage Night At the Opera
The album is complex and ambitious. One of the most striking components of the album is how many of the compositions are musically laid back but features dark lyrical content (best emphasized on the stunning 8 minute epic, “Suicide Demo for Kara Walker”). It reminds me of Leonard Cohen, but with more going on musically (and vocally). The album is a cohesive whole. The only song that seems out of place sonically may be the album’s best track, the astounding 11 minute epic “Bay of Pigs” (a even longer version was released as a single in 2009). If Bays of Pigs is Dan Bejar’s Desolation Row, this album may be his Highway 61 Revisited (not musically, but in scope and legacy).
