#5 Album That Rocked My World 2011: EMA - Past Life Martyred Saints
Audio: Breakfast
To a certain extent I was drawn to this album for nostalgic reasons. Thematically it reminded me of the grunge and industrial I listened to in my teens during the early to mid 90’s. But this album abandons the harshness and aggression (even though there is some grunge like elements with the loud & soft dynamics). Instead it handles dark subjects in a way that is hauntingly gorgeous. It is hard not to be drawn to the raw emotion, honesty & vulnerability of this album. The album opens with an epic (the 7+ minutes of The Grey Ship) then it builds upon that foundation right up to an epic closer (the 6 1/2 minutes of Red Star). It is a pretty confident & spectacular debut.
