Fucked Up (and this album) is one of those bands that have just started to grow on me as of late. This album really is an epic of an album. Like most concept rock operas the album borders on just being a little bit too ambitious and self indulgent. But there is no shortage of stunning moments which breaks free from the traditional confines of hardcore. Many of the albums highlights (Queen of Hearts, The Other Shoe, Lights Go Up) contains pretty female vocals (from Jennifer Castle & Madeline Follin) to provide a poignant counter point to the aggressive vocals of Damian Abraham (Pink Eyes). The album closer (Lights Go Up) also features vocals from Kurt Vile. The album is an irresistible force. It is reminiscent of a modern day Zen Arcade by Hüsker Dü (an ambitious concept album from a band that was starting to abandon their hardcore roots).
